At the beginning, Disha started its operations with Dr. Debasish Bhattacharya’s private chambers. In May 1997, Dr. Debashish Bhattacharya along with two of his friends, Dr. Tushar Kanti Hazra and Dr. Samar Kumar Basak, founded Disha Eye Hospitals, a Private Limited Company. They are well-known alumni of Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College.

Disha’s first building was inaugurated on the 12th of December, 1998. Starting with a 20,000 sq. ft. two- storey building, right across Barrackpore station, Disha was an immediate success. Within a year, it saw itself operating more than 5,000 patients.
Dr. Tushar Sinha (alumnus of NRS Medical College) played an instrumental role in the transformation of  the retina department after a year it was founded.
